Gastroentrology

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the digestive system. Our digestive system consists of food-pipe or oesophagus, stomach, intestine, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, appendix, rectum and anal canal. Common diseases include nausea, vomiting with or without blood, heartburn or dyspepsia, difficulty in swallowing, gastritis, ulcers, jaundice, diarrhoea with or without blood, infections, autoimmune diseases, cancers, abdominal pain, and others. Most of these diseases can be diagnosed by taking history and examination of the patient with or without certain routine tests. In certain cases direct examination of inside the digestive system is done by passing a camera called endoscopy. During this process biopsy of the diseased part is taken for confirming the diagnosis and in case of bleeding or obstruction, corrective measures are taken. These facilities are available in Zainab Panjwani Memorial Hospital under supervision of Consultants.
